Trailer Rules to Consider Before You Buy Subaru Forester Models

Many drivers consider a Subaru Forester because, in addition to being a fantastic family vehicle, it also offers great potential for towing a trailer. However, before you think about buying any towing vehicle, you need to be aware of these trailer rules to ensure that you don’t end up getting a ticket.

There is no “X kg no brakes” Rule:

Many drivers assume that the “X kg no brakes” guideline is actually a hard and fast rule for all towing vehicles. While most large four wheel drives, including the new Subaru Forester, allows for 750 kg unbraked capacity, but this is not always the case. For example, the Toyota Kluger has a capacity of 700 kilograms unbraked and the Suzuki Vitara is even lower at 400 kilograms. While trailer brakes are a sensible idea if you are towing anything over 200 kilograms, it is good to know your unbraked capacity.

Independent Trailer Brakes:

If your capacity is above 2000 kilograms, you are going to need independent trailer brakes. This rule means that it is not permissible to use overrun brakes. The primary reason for this is to have greater control over trailer sway. This is most effectively handled when you apply only the brakes on the trailer. You will also need a breakaway system. This means that if the trailer is disconnected from the towing car, the brakes will be automatically applied.

The number of chains required by law depends on the weight of the trailer. If your trailer weighs up to 2500 kilograms, only one chain is required, and two chains are needed for any above 2500 kilograms. However, it is a good idea to have double chains for your trailer, regardless of the weight. This means that they can be crossed over to catch the drawbar in the event it disconnects.

The Maximum Tow Capacity:

The vehicle maximum tow capacity is calculated as the lowest figure of several factors. This means that you need to be aware of the specifications of your potential new vehicle. The implication of this is if you choose a vehicle with a lower rating, it doesn’t matter if you buy a tow bar rated higher, it will still be limited to your vehicle capacity.

The Basics:

Finally, you need to be aware of the basic rules. No passengers are permitted to ride in a trailer, driver’s cannot tow more than one trailer simultaneously, and learners are not permitted to tow a trailer. There are lots of trailer rules, so ensure that once you have chosen your towing vehicle, you educate yourself to avoid getting on the wrong side of the law.
