The fresh new updated 2018 Subaru WRX and WRX STI are now available for sale in Australia. As many expected, both of these models have arrived with a significant amount of upgrades. At the very top of the range, there is also a brand new specification for the R model. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for those looking to take the plunge.
At First Glance
The styling changes, includes features, such as a revised front bumper and grille, steering responsive LED headlights, integrated indicators, LED foglights and new 18” and 19” alloy wheels. Every model in the range gets these new LED headlights and foglights. In the cabin, there is an upgraded interior finish that’s more cohesive than the outgoing models, and there is a new multi function display. The Subaru WRX STI has glossy black surfaces all over the following areas: the instrument panel centre, the steering centre bezel, the gear shift surround and the door switch panel. All told, the new WRX series looks great, the new LED headlights are fantastic and add plenty of functionality.
The New Equipment Upgrades
The new equipment upgrades for the WRX models include adjusted front and rear damping struts, a revised suspension, Jurid performance brake pads, red braking calipers, heated door mirrors, electric lumbar support and 18” alloy wheels. The Jurid brakes are particularly interesting as they promise an astonishing 20% increase in braking efficiency. There are now automatic wipers and headlights that are a trickle down from the WRX Premium. The WRX Premium now has an eight way powered driving seat, that has dual memory and lumbar support. The driver and front passenger seats are both heated. EyeSight is also on board, there’s an electric parking brake and automatic vehicle hold on the CVT variants.
Upgrading to the WRX STI
Taking the next step up to the WRX STI adds more equipment, such as cross drilled rotors, yellow Brembo six piston brake callipers, yellow Brembo two piston grabber, red seatbelts, optimised revised suspension, new suspension coils, improved shock absorbers and 19” alloy wheels. The powertrain is still the 2.5 litre turbocharged four cylinder powerplant that generates 221 kW of power and 407 Nm of torque.
