The 2017 Subaru Impreza Makes a New York Auto Show Debut

The new Subaru Impreza hatch and sedan models have just had their debut at the New York Auto show. There are quite a few changes to the 2016 Subaru Impreza, Australia-based drivers are used to. Here are some of the salient details that we now definitely know.

The Subaru Global Platform

As had been previously hinted, the new Impreza lineup utilises the Subaru Global Platform architecture. This system will be used on a variety of Subaru cars in the future, in order to speed up development and reduce costs. This has made the new models larger than the 2016 Subaru Impreza; Australia drivers are used to. The sedan is 4.63m long, 1.78m wide and 1.45m tall with a wheelbase of 2.64m. This makes these cars 4cm wider, although the ride has been lowered by 1 cm to improve aerodynamic performance. This platform is designed to deliver a higher quality of comfort, agility and crash protection.

Engineering Details

Being a Subaru, both the Impreza sedan and hatch are all wheel drive models. The power is provided by a 2.0L four cylinder horizontally opposed “Boxer” engine that has been revised for this release. The result is an engine with a little more grunt than its predecessor. The power has been improved from 110kW to 114kW and the torque has increased from 196Nm to 200Nm. It appears that there will be no manual transmission version offered initially and instead the Lineartronic CVT will be standard. There will also be a sport variant available, with features such as 18” wheels, a torque vectoring system, sports suspension, a rear stabiliser and a lower centre of gravity.

The Impreza Experience

With all the other changes, one would expect a radically different look and feel inside the cabin. However, the changes are quite subtle and a Subaru driver will quickly feel at home. The cabin is quite spartan, but there is a prominent addition in the form of the new integrated 8” media centre with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. As you would expect, the driver position in the sport model is lower than the rest of the range. The 2017 Impreza Sport also has additional features, such as aluminium pedals, a Harman/Kardon stereo, a leather wrapped steering wheel and a gear surround boot. As one would expect, the entire range has the latest version of the EyeSight Safety System on board. This system has received a significant update recently and it has several safety systems, including pre collision warnings, adaptive cruise control, autonomous braking, lane departure warnings, lane keeping assistance, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alerts and automatic braking for the reversing camera.
