Today we will be taking a look at the new Subaru WRX STI RA-R and what it has to offer the dedicated petrol head.
The WRX STI RA-R Basics
This is a limited edition version of the WRX STI sports sedan with significant power bump and a reduction in weight. The Subaru WRX STI RA-R has been unveiled as a Japanese market release with some exciting equipment that we have not seen on the standard WRX STI model. Essentially, this is a Japanese version of the WRX STI Type RA that was released in the US to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first STI release.
The Specification
The WRX STI RA-R has been on a crash diet with a 10kg weight drop compare to the WRX STI standard car. The engine has been tuned from the Subaru S208 to get the best from the 2.0 litre turbocharged “boxer” power plant. This engine will now generate 242 kW of power and 432 Nm of torque. To put this is some perspective, the standard WRX STI that is sold here in Australia has the earlier 2.5 litre turbocharged “boxer” engine that generates 221 kW of power and 407 Nm of torque. As you can see, the WRX STI RA-R packs in more performance from a smaller engine in a lighter car. There are no exact figures on performance, but it should come as no surprise that Subaru describes the Type RA-R as having enhanced speed and enjoyment.
More Feature Details
The WRX STI RA-R has plenty of other features and equipment that are worth getting excited about, such as: Brembo brakes, specialised dampers and coil springs, a performance exhaust system, a fixed rear wing, carbon fibre side mirror covers, cherry red exterior accents, matte black BBS 18” alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres. In the cabin, there are some very nice touches, such as sports seats with cloth trim and red stitching, a centre armrest with matching red stitching and leather look door inserts. To cut down on weight further, there is no spare wheel, and instead, there is a tyre repair kit.
Australian Availability
The Subaru WRX STI RA-R is an exclusive Japanese market only release that is strictly limited to 500 units. There are no current plans to extend the release to other countries, and we will have to see if a similar release will be available here in the future.
