A Brief Review of the 2017 Subaru Outback

The Subaru Outback, Perth drivers may be familiar with is back with a new update for 2017. This car has been a great success in Australia, riding on the wave of SUV popularity that we have seen in recent years. Let’s take a closer look at what this latest incarnation has to offer.

The Basics:

For the uninitiated, the Subaru Outback is a smaller five seater SUV based on the Subaru Liberty car. It is still classed as a large SUV, but it has keener pricing when compared to the competition. All Outbacks are well appointed with a comfortable interior that accommodates five adults easily. As a Subaru and an SUV, you shouldn’t be surprised by the presence of a cultured all wheel drive system that handles rough roads with ease. These cars ride high, and many models now feature auto emergency braking.

Common Specifications:

Across the entire range, the Outback has a generous amount of equipment fitted as standard, such as cruise control, an adjustable leather wrapped steering wheel, automatic windscreen wipers, automatic headlights, dual zone air conditioning, a reversing camera, tinted rear windows, metallic or pearl paint finishes, 7 airbags, electronic stability control, a touchscreen infotainment console, Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, Auxiliary inputs, USB ports and a three year warranty with unlimited kilometres.

All Outbacks have aluminium alloy wheels, including a full sized spare, these are 17” wheels on cheaper models and 18” as you go further up the range. Each automatic transmission model is equipped with the EyeSight safety suite, which features: automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control.

Engine Choices:

The most fuel efficient powerplant in the Outback range is the 2.0 litre turbo diesel that powers the Subaru Outback 2.0D. This only uses 5.7L/100km combined if your open road usage is sedate cruising. This engine can create a lot of pollution when used in a mainly urban setting. A particulate filter is fitted, and you will need to drive for at least half an hour, at out of town speeds weekly, so that the filter can clean itself.

The best alternative engine in the lineup is the 2.5 litre four cylinder petrol unit. This engine has a fuel efficiency of 7.3L/100km combined. This figure is assisted by the stop start system that saves fuel by automatically turning the engine off when stationary in heavy city traffic.

The Outback 3.6R has the most powerful engine in the entire range. This 3.6 litre powerplant has six cylinders and generates 50% more power than the previously mentioned 2.5 litre petrol model. Of course, this uses significantly more fuel, but you get the best equipment levels in the range and a Harmon Kardon audio system to soften the blow.
