A Brief Revisit to the 2016 Subaru WRX STI

A Brief Revisit to the 2016 Subaru WRX STI
October 14, 2016 City Subaru

The Subaru WRX STI for sale Australia has been available for a while now, and we thought we should revisit the car. When a car has been out for a little while, and some of the hype dies down it is good to take another look with more perspective. A WRX of “Rex” as it is affectionately known in Australia is a rallying icon around the world. The rallying heritage established in the 90’s and early 00’s can still inspire awe. For a while, Subaru left the rallying game entirely, but a recent return to the Australian Rallying Championship (ARC) this year has reignited the spark in many fans.

Is it All About the Power?

The Subaru WRX STI has a turbocharged 2.5 litre, four cylinder, horizontally opposed “Boxer” powerplant. This engine is paired with a six speed manual gearbox, it generates 221kW of power and 407 Nm of torque. This engine is specially tuned to get the best performance possible.

This power is all well and good, but how does it translate to the road? The answer is very well indeed, the entire car has been lightened and the all wheel drive system is as surefooted as ever. The result is a car that has amazing handling and poise in the corners. Stopping is easy with Brembo brakes and lightweight 18” alloy wheels shod with Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres.

When driving around town you may notice that it feels a little rough around the edges, but that can be forgiven in a full on performance saloon. When driving around you can expect your fuel consumption to be around 10.4L/100km combined if you can drive conservatively.

Is the WRX STI a Head Turner?

The short answer is most definitely yes; you cannot miss the muscular frame, boxy wheel arches, 18” wheels and the huge spoiler around the back. Inside you would expect a spartan interior, but this is not the case, there are features such as variable driving modes, side view monitors, a sporty flat bottomed steering wheel, heated sports seats with leather trim, a 7” touchscreen, a stereo with Harmon Kardon speakers, smart keys and plenty of STI branded touches.

Some Final Thoughts

The WRX STI has a new pricing strategy in place that makes this car cheaper than the outgoing model. The top of the line, premium model is priced at $55,390 plus on roads, which represents tremendous value for a performance saloon with these features. The “Rex” can reach 100km/hr in just 4.9 seconds making it a great choice for a weekend racer. If you love performance saloon cars, you simply cannot go wrong buying a Subaru WRX STI.
