3 Common Driving Myths Busted with the Subaru Impreza

Subaru Impreza - Hatch

There are plenty of alleged facts that we encounter in our lives that are not actually true. This phenomenon is even more relevant today when we are exposed to rumours from all over the world via the internet. Separating fact from fiction can be a difficult and time consuming process that is often not worth the effort. Driving facts are no different; there are many driving myths that are widely believed but are not true, here are three of our favourites.

1. Are Men Better Drivers?

This is actually not true based on one of the better sources of information for any industry anywhere. We are talking about insurance actuaries that base their entire business model on evaluating risks for various driving demographics. Errors made in this risk assessment would result in massive financial losses for an insurance company, and so they have no reason to lie about their findings. A study was carried out by the Royal Automobile Association of South Australia in 2015 of 100,000 insurance claims there. It was found that women made 7,000 fewer crash related insurance claims compared to men over a two year period. It was also highlighted that male drivers were responsible for almost two thirds of rear end crashes and this is the most common fender bender. Men are four times more likely to be involved in crashes that result in a fatality.

2. Red Cars are More Expensive to Insure

This myth has been around for years, and it revolves around the idea that red cars are more expensive because they are faster. Of course, sports cars are popular in red, but they also come in a host of other colours as well. There is no proof that a red car is more likely to be stolen or involved in a high speed collision. So it logically follows that there is no hidden insurance premium for red car coverage and this myth should be consigned to history where it belongs.

3. Hands Free Phones are Safe for Driving

It is legal to use a phone while driving if it is housed in an appropriate cradle and using a phone in any other way is likely to get you in trouble with the Police. However, several recent studies have actually shown that even using a phone hands-free via Bluetooth can still be a significant distraction. In fact, it is even more distracting than talking to a passenger in the car with you or even experiencing lower levels of intoxication. Bearing this in mind each driver will have to make a judgement call on if they will use a phone hands-free while driving.
